HIV and CVD – challenges and solutions for primary care
There is a bi-directional relationship between HIV and cardiovascular disease (CVD), as HIV increases the risk of CVD, while CVD pathogenesis progresses more rapidly in people living with HIV (PLWHIV). GPs are in well placed to identify risk of CVD early in PLWHIV, and are able to identify opportunities for timely management.
This program aims to help GPs identify the cohort of HIV patients with steadily increasing CVD risk who may be ‘’slipping through the cracks”, and improve recognition, vigilance and best-practice intervention.
Using a person-centred approach to the management of HIV and CVD risk, the program will detail the current HIV-specific CVD treatment algorithms, and detail evidence-based treatment options that are most suited for this patient population.
